SUMMARY:Eugene Huggins
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a dose of authentic\, “drenching wet” blues as the legendary Eugene Huggins takes the stage at The Saloon. As San Francisco’s oldest bar\, The Saloon is the perfect cathedral for Huggins’ raw\, unfiltered sound. A North Beach institution in his own right\, Huggins brings a lifetime of blues pedigree to Grant Avenue\, delivering a high-fidelity performance that makes the sawdust on the floor feel like a holy relic of the city’s musical past. \nThe Sound: Huggins is a master of the Harmonica and Traditional Blues. Having “cut his eyeteeth” on the style of Little Walter\, his playing is defined by a deep\, crying tone and a relentless rhythmic drive. His sets are a journey through the heart of the blues—from the smoking shuffles of Muddy Waters and Junior Wells to gritty renditions of Chuck Berry and Howlin’ Wolf. \nThe Pedigree: This isn’t just a local gig; it’s a masterclass. Huggins has shared the stage with icons like Buddy Guy\, Chuck Berry\, Carlos Santana\, and Tom Waits. That “first-call” level of musicianship is evident in every note\, whether he is leading his full band through a high-energy dance set or engaging in a soulful\, improvisational dialogue with a burning lead guitarist. \nThe Saloon Experience: There is no better place to hear Eugene Huggins than under the low ceilings and neon lights of The Saloon. The energy is high\, the dance floor is usually packed\, and the barrier between the band and the crowd is non-existent. It’s an unpretentious\, high-energy “joint” where the music is the only thing that matters. \nNo Cover: Like many of the best things in North Beach\, Huggins’ performances at The Saloon are often accessible to anyone with a few dollars for the tip jar and a thirst for real blues. It remains one of the city’s most elite\, yet accessible\, cultural experiences. \n\nAbout Eugene Huggins\nA Sausalito native and a fixture of the Bay Area scene since the late 60s\, Eugene Huggins has fronted legendary outfits like The Casuals and Eugene and the Bluejeans. Known for his “down-to-earth” stage presence and virtuosic harmonica skills\, he has spent decades preserving the “Chicago-to-West Coast” blues tradition. Whether he is performing with his long-time collaborators or leading a new generation of players\, Huggins remains a “restless melodist” whose music continues to “open up and soothe the soul” of San Francisco.

SUMMARY:Catherine Palmer: House Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Join Hang Art for the opening of House Portraits\, a solo exhibition by San Francisco artist Catherine Palmer. This collection features new oil paintings that document the hidden corners and quiet residential architecture of the city. The opening reception takes place during North Beach First Fridays\, offering an early-evening look at Palmer’s latest body of work. \nThe Exhibition\nIn House Portraits\, Catherine Palmer continues her exploration of the San Francisco landscape\, specifically the interplay between light and the city’s dense housing structures. Her process begins with observational photography during her daily routine\, capturing the specific way dawn and dusk light interacts with the Victorian and Edwardian silhouettes of the northern neighborhoods. \nStyle: Palmer reinterprets architectural forms through a lens of geometric abstraction. While her work is rooted in American Realism\, she strips away unnecessary detail to focus on the stark contrasts of light and shadow. \nAtmosphere: The paintings are characterized by a lack of human activity\, creating a voyeuristic and meditative perspective. This vacant quality allows the viewer to focus entirely on the rhythm of the buildings and the atmosphere of the hillsides. \nThe Medium: Using a deliberate application of oil on canvas\, Palmer builds her compositions through intuitive color relationships and a focus on structural cohesion. \nThe Artist\nCatherine Palmer has been a part of the San Francisco creative community for over three decades. After a career in arts education\, she dedicated herself full-time to her studio practice in 2008. Her work is informed by her deep familiarity with the city’s topography and its unique microclimates\, which she renders with technical precision and emotional resonance.

SUMMARY:Gaea Shell & Scott Foster
DESCRIPTION:Gaea Schell and Scott Foster perform at Biordi Art Imports\, bringing jazz to North Beach First Fridays. Join them for an engaging performance that blends Schell’s mastery of flute\, piano\, and vocals with Foster’s expressive guitar playing. Experience a night of sophisticated jazz\, rich harmonies\, and Latin-inspired rhythms\, making for a memorable musical event at Biordi Imports. \nGaea Schell is known among her peers for swinging eighth notes\, subtle phrasing and contemplative writing\, Bay area based pianist\, composer\, flutist (and vocalist) Gaea Schell (also late diagnosed autistic) is originally from Alberta\, Canada\, where she grew up playing music from an early age. Recorder lessons at age 6 with family friend\, the late San Francisco based drummer Eddie Marshall\, was one of her first musical ventures. \nPursuit of a classical harp degree led to checking out Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans records in the school library\, inspiring a move East (after declining a Berklee scholarship) and subsequent graduation with distinction from the jazz program at acclaimed McGill University in Montreal. The real learning\, however\, came from playing on the bandstand with respected elders who spent considerable time themselves playing with greats such as Joe Henderson\, Wynton Kelly\, Ella Fitzgerald. Gaea feels “it’s so important to listen\, experience\, and understand the tradition of this music”. \nScott Foster received his Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston. He pursued additional music studies at University of California Davis and private studies with Jon Damian\, Rick Peckham and Henry Robinett. Scott is an active performer as leader of the Scott Foster Trio and Quartet and as a sideman with many local groups. His recent recordings range from industrial pop to country and folk to modern jazz. \n

SUMMARY:Grandma’s Ashtray by Joanna Lioce
DESCRIPTION:Experience the hidden textures of the Golden State through Grandma’s Ashtray\, a found art exhibition curated by longtime North Beach fixture and Vesuvio bartender Joanna Lioce. This showcase departs from traditional gallery presentations\, utilizing the historic\, multi-level environment of Vesuvio Cafe to display a collection of objects and ephemera gathered from the coastal towns and desert stretches of California. \nThe Exhibition\nGrandma’s Ashtray is a visual survey of the discarded and the rediscovered. The exhibition features a diverse array of found art pieces—ranging from vintage curios and weathered signage to obscure mid-century domestic artifacts. \nThe Collection: Each piece in the show has been sourced by Lioce during her travels across California. The items serve as tangible records of the state’s shifting cultural landscape\, highlighting the aesthetic beauty of objects that have been aged by time and the elements. \nThe Theme: The show explores the concept of the “found object” as a narrative tool. By removing these items from their original contexts and placing them within the storied walls of Vesuvio\, Lioce invites viewers to consider the personal and collective histories behind California’s roadside and suburban past. \nThe Arrangement: The art is integrated into the existing décor of the bar\, creating a scavenger-hunt style viewing experience that complements the venue’s famous collection of Beat-era memorabilia and local art. \nThe Artist\nJoanna Lioce has been a definitive part of the North Beach community for over 20 years. As a veteran bartender at Vesuvio and the creator of the Wacky Wednesdays music series in Kerouac Alley\, she has long been a facilitator for the neighborhood’s creative energy. Her work as a collector and found-art curator is an extension of her role as a keeper of North Beach’s bohemian spirit\, reflecting a lifelong interest in the intersection of history\, travel\, and accidental art. \nThe Setting\nVesuvio Cafe remains one of the most significant cultural landmarks in San Francisco. Established in 1948 and located next to City Lights Bookstore\, it has served as the preferred haunt for generations of poets\, artists\, and musicians. The bar’s interior—with its stained glass\, wood-paneled walls\, and intimate second-floor balcony—provides a backdrop that is as much a part of the exhibition as the art itself.

SUMMARY:Out on the Bay\, art by Pablo Fernicola
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of spring in North Beach with Out on the Bay\, a new exhibition by local artist Pablo Fernicola. Debuting this April at Sweetie’s Art Bar\, the show offers an intimate look at the textures and perspectives of the San Francisco waterfront. \nThe Exhibition\nHosted in Sweetie’s signature Black & White Gallery\, the exhibition centers on the unique visual identity of the San Francisco Bay. While the venue is known for its rotation of artists who draw inspiration from the city’s aquatic borders\, Fernicola’s work brings a specific focus to the movement and atmosphere found “out on the bay.” \nThe collection captures: \nThe Maritime Perspective: Views of the water that move beyond the typical tourist postcard\, focusing instead on the lived experience of the local sailing and rowing communities. \nAtmospheric Transitions: The shifting light and fog patterns that define the Bay Area’s microclimates. \nNeighborhood Integration: Art that reflects the salt-and-grit spirit of North Beach and the nearby Embarcadero. \nFirst Friday: Art + Jazz\nThe exhibition’s opening coincides with North Beach First Fridays\, the neighborhood’s monthly celebration of local galleries and studios. At Sweetie’s\, the visual art is traditionally paired with live music\, creating a multisensory experience that fills both the gallery and the bar area. \nLive Music: The Vince Lateano Trio—featuring some of the most seasoned jazz players in the city—sets the tone for the evening. Expect three sets of classic swing and hard bop\, often featuring surprise guest horn players or vocalists. \nThe Atmosphere: Sweetie’s remains one of the few places in the city that maintains a neighborhood living room feel. Between the art and the music\, you can usually find a game of pool in progress and a mix of local artists\, musicians\, and long-time North Beach residents. \nThe Venue\nOwned by artist and sailor Flicka McGurrin\, Sweetie’s Art Bar is a cornerstone of the district’s creative scene. It is a space where high-caliber art meets an unpretentious bar environment. The cocktails are straightforward\, the pool is free\, and the focus is always on supporting the local creative ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Gaucho Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area band that combines the influence of gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music\, gutbucket blues and elements of ragtime. Their sound\, a uniquely American concoction\, blends instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for more. As founder\, guitarist\, and main composer Dave Ricketts says\, the band is “in love with the music of Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers\, as well as the stories\, the life styles and the foot steps of hundreds of other great jazz\, blues\, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950’s” \nGaucho has recorded eight albums\, tours regularly\, and has an increasing repertoire of over forty original tunes. Seven of their tunes are featured in the 2012 film “Trattoria”; one was chosen by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their website; and another is featured in the outtakes section of the Pixar DVD CARS 2. In 2018\, Gaucho got a song in the Hollywood Movie “Destination Wedding” starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. And two of Dave’s own compositions will be placed in a New York City based indie film\, “Stationed at Home\,” in 2022. \nLed by eminent guitarist\, Dave Ricketts\, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly twenty years\, and one of the busiest bands in the bay area playing 5 to 10 gigs a week. Together with virtuosos Rob Reich–accordion and Craig Venetresco–guitar\, superlative bassist Ari Munkres\, the honorable Leon Oakley–cornet\, and versatile percussionist Steve Apple\, these guys keep crowds moving with their beats and complex rhythms.

SUMMARY:Coit Tower Poetry Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the Coit Tower Poetry Club for the April installment of their First Friday residency. This month\, the gathering focuses on the work of Lucille Clifton (1936–2010)\, an American poet celebrated for her spare\, powerful language and her exploration of the endurance of the human spirit. \nThe Featured Poet\nLucille Clifton was a prolific author of poetry and children’s books whose work is noted for its economy and directness. A former Poet Laureate of Maryland and a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize\, Clifton developed a signature style characterized by a lack of capitalization and minimal punctuation. Her writing centers on themes of the body\, family history\, and the African American experience\, turning everyday observations into profound statements on survival and self-definition. \n\nwon’t you celebrate with me what i have shaped into a kind of life? i had no model. born in babylon both nonwhite and woman what did i see to be except myself? From won’t you celebrate with me (1993) \n\nClifton’s poetry is often described as unadorned and grounded. By stripping away traditional formal constraints\, she allowed the rhythm of common speech to carry the weight of her narratives. Reading her work at the summit of Telegraph Hill—where the city meets the open bay—complements her focus on the relationship between the individual and the vast\, often difficult world around them. \nThe Ritual\nThe reading takes place outdoors on the back lawn of Coit Tower. Following the established club tradition\, attendees form a circle and pass a collection of the featured poet’s work from hand to hand. There is an open invitation for anyone to step forward and read a selection aloud\, though listening is equally encouraged. \nThe Setting\nPerched at the top of Telegraph Hill\, the location provides a 360-degree view of San Francisco and the waterfront. The natural quiet of the hill after dark creates a focused environment for the spoken word\, offering a brief departure from the activity of the city below. \nThe Community\nThis is a grassroots\, unpretentious gathering. It is open to all\, regardless of their familiarity with Lucille Clifton’s work. Whether you are a regular attendee or a passerby walking the Filbert Steps\, you are welcome to join the circle.

SUMMARY:Magic School Busk
DESCRIPTION:Experience the ultimate “living theater” of North Beach as The Magic School Busk takes up their weekly residency directly in front of The Red Window. Positioned at the vibrant\, sun-soaked corner of Stockton and Columbus\, this high-energy busking collective captures the spontaneous spirit of the neighborhood. \nThe performance is a masterclass in Street Swing and improvisational Jazz. Drawing from the “busking” tradition of New Orleans and the European “Hot Club” sound\, the ensemble specializes in acoustic music that is both technically brilliant and completely unpretentious. The line-up is fluid\, often featuring a “who’s who” of local instrumentalists who bring a “restless melodicism” to classic standards and upbeat\, toe-tapping originals. \nThe Magic School Busk is more than just a band; they are the neighborhood’s “resident joy-makers.” Because they perform on the street level\, the barrier between musician and audience disappears\, inviting passersby to stop\, dance\, and engage with the music in real-time. Whether you are enjoying a gin tonic on the Red Window’s outdoor patio or just walking by with a cannoli in hand\, the band provides an elite\, soulful soundtrack that defines the modern North Beach experience. \n\nAbout The Magic School Busk\nBorn from the city’s post-pandemic “street-side” revival\, The Magic School Busk is a collective of veteran Bay Area musicians dedicated to the art of public performance. They emphasize the “acoustic and the authentic\,” eschewing heavy amplification for the natural resonance of brass\, strings\, and woodwinds. Often featuring members from some of the city’s most popular jazz and swing outfits\, the “Busk” is celebrated for its ability to read a crowd and create a party out of thin air. They represent the best of San Francisco’s musical resilience—keeping the city’s culture loud\, proud\, and accessible to everyone on the street. \n

SUMMARY:Cliff Meyers & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Comstock Saloon continues its tradition of hosting the city’s most compelling musical “finds” with Cliff Meyers & Friends. A fixture of the Bay Area’s more experimental and groove-heavy jazz circles\, Meyers brings a collective energy to the room that transforms the historic saloon into a vibrant\, modern listening space. \nThe Music: Cliff Meyers is known for a sound that leans into Jazz-Funk and Soul-Jazz. His “Friends” typically include a rotating cast of top-tier local session players—musicians who have spent time in the trenches of the Mission and North Beach scenes. Expect deep\, locked-in grooves\, extended improvisational jams\, and a “restless melodicism” that keeps the set unpredictable. \nThe Performance: Unlike a standard jazz trio\, a “Cliff Meyers & Friends” set often feels like a curated jam session among masters. The music is kinetic and conversational\, moving from tight\, soulful arrangements to open-ended sonic explorations that fill every corner of Comstock’s high-ceilinged room. \nThe Setting: There is a unique friction in hearing Meyers’ contemporary\, groove-oriented sound inside a bar that looks exactly as it did in 1907. The polished wood and dim\, golden lighting provide a sultry\, noir-ish backdrop for the band’s electric energy. \nThe Experience: This is the ideal spot for those who want their jazz with a side of grit and soul. Whether you’re sitting at the bar with a Pisco Punch or tucked into a booth for dinner\, the band provides a high-fidelity soundtrack that is as intellectually stimulating as it is physically infectious.
