SUMMARY:Il Funk ky Shu’s Wit Nu Soles
DESCRIPTION:II Funk ky Shu’s wit Nu Soles is a powerhouse R&B\, soul\, and funk ensemble that has become a cornerstone of the North Beach live music scene. Led by the deep\, rhythmic grooves of Shepard on bass and the commanding\, soulful vocals of Tambora\, the band is celebrated for their “all-killer\, no-filler” sets. Whether they are performing at local staples like Tupelo or larger venues like Yoshi’s\, their mission is simple: to make the audience boogie with a mix of timeless classics and high-octane originals. \nSoulful Repertoire: Their sets are a masterclass in the Great American Soulbook\, featuring hit covers ranging from the Jackson 5’s “ABC” to modern anthems like “Uptown Funk” and “Get Lucky.” They specialize in bringing a “legitimate band” feel to every cover\, infused with their own improvisational flair. \nThe “Nu Soles” Sound: The band typically features a lush\, full sound powered by a tight rhythm section and a vibrant horn line—including trumpet\, tenor sax\, and trombone—creating a Wall of Sound that is impossible to sit still to. \nGlobal Influence\, Local Roots: After years of performing abroad\, the group returned to San Francisco to reclaim their status as neighborhood favorites. They are frequent headliners for North Beach First Fridays\, often performing high-energy sets that turn Grant Avenue into an open-air dance floor. \nNo Cover Groove: At venues like Tupelo\, their Saturday night residencies are usually free to the public\, offering world-class musicianship without a cover charge—though tipping the band for their marathon 3-hour sets is highly encouraged.

SUMMARY:SGT. SPLENDOR + THE SLY STONES (Eric Mcfadden\, Kate Vargas\, Ronkat + Many More Stars) SGT. SPLENDOR + THE SLY STONES (Eric Mcfadden\, Kate Vargas\, Ronkat + Many More Stars)
DESCRIPTION:SGT. SPLENDOR \nSgt. Splendor works from the groove up\, fueled by chemistry\, curiosity\, and serious musicianship. Centered around Kate Vargas and Eric McFadden\, the band blends the elastic\, communal pulse of Sly and the Family Stone\, the raw emotional authority of PJ Harvey\, and the loose-limbed swagger of The Rolling Stones into a sound that’s exciting\, exploratory\, and sharply focused. Vargas delivers vocals with clarity\, bite\, and an unflinching sense of timing\, while McFadden’s shape-shifting guitar work draws from gritty rock\, funk\, blues\, and flamenco\, informed by years on the road leading his own projects and touring with artists like George Clinton and Eric Burdon. Live\, Sgt. Splendor thrives on controlled chaos\, often performing with rotating rhythm sections that keep the music responsive and unpredictable. That approach has landed them on festival stages such as BottleRock\, MEMPHO\, High Sierra\, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, and Olympia Funk Fest\, as well as tours and shared bills with Samantha Fish\, Fantastic Negrito\, Joan Baez\, The Nth Power\, and Mike Dillon’s Punkadelick. \nSgt. SUMMARY:Mitch Polzak
DESCRIPTION:The big guy from out West and larger than life energy (he’s also 6’5’) performer\, guitarist\, singer\, banjoist\, songwriter\, composer\, entertainer\, musical historian and teacher Mitch Polzak wears his heart on his sleeve and his playing in his heart. \nPolzak performs rockabilly and 60’s country music with the religious fervor of Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash and delivers a Honky Tonk ballad with the sincerity of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Mitch will bring a room to a fevered pitch of joyous energy on the dance floor and then tell you a story in a song like two old friends sitting at a kitchen table at midnight. \nHis virtuosic guitar skills and influences range from the blazing flying fingers of Joe Maphis \, Marty Stuart\, Roy Clark\, and Don Rich to the timeless dreamlike state of “Sleepwalk” by Santo and Johnny along with the vast valleys of deep rumbling twang associated with Duane Eddy. \nThere is not one singular definition of Polzak’s music but that is very specific to what he does. Being fluent in the musical languages of Country\, Rockabilly\, Honky Tonk\, The Bakersfield Sound\, Surf\, early Rock and Roll\, Bluegrass\, Cajun\, Blues\, and Truck Driving music gives Polzak the unique voice of the melting pot of the American musical experience. This is why he consistently connects with so many people directly at every show. \nPolzak’s abundant joy in communicating with people through music leaps off the stage through every fiber of his being. His near-constant genuine smile can be seen clear across the room and invites you in without any pretense or judgements. Some call him “The Honky Tonk Mister Rogers”! \nMake no mistake though. Underneath that smile is a deep and reverent respect for the history and integrity of the music and musicians who came before him and created the sounds and told their stories. \nJust as Waylon Jennings created his own outlaw sound\, as Johnny Cash could never be put in a box\, the full throttle intensity of Jerry Lee Lewis’s rock and roll grabs us and takes to a time and place\, Polzak’s live show has the unvarnished purity of the Bakersfield Sound paying homage to his California musical heroes Buck Owens\, Merle Haggard\, Wynn Stewart and Dwight Yokam. It’s a heaping helping\, but a Mitch Polzak show brings all of these musical flavors to the table in a potluck of American musical flavor. \nPolzak learned firsthand from some of his musical influences\, sharing the stage with legends like Don Maddox of The Maddox Bros. and Rose\, deeply respected contemporary and friend Deke Dickerspn\, The Ragin’ Cajun Doug Kershaw\, Rockabilly icons Joe Clay and Gene Summers\, former Bluegrass Boy and West Coast music pioneer Peter Rowan and Cajun greats Jimmy Breaux\, Andrew Carriere\, and Blake Miller. He has also shared the bill with Brian Setzer\, Jerry Lee Lewis\, Duane Eddy\, The Stray Cats\, Big Sandy and The Fly Rite Boys\, and Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives.

SUMMARY:Dewayne Oakley and Ralph Nelson
DESCRIPTION:Transport yourself to the Rive Gauche without leaving Fillmore Street. Chouquet’s invites you to experience “Jazz on the Patio\,” a long-standing neighborhood tradition that pairs world-class live music with the breezy elegance of a classic French bistro. Set against the backdrop of one of San Francisco’s most iconic shopping corridors\, this event offers a high-fidelity sensory experience where the “restless melodicism” of local jazz meets the refined flavors of France. \nFeaturing the Dewayne Oakley Blues Ensemble\nThis weekend’s soundtrack is provided by the seasoned mastery of Dewayne Oakley and Ralph Nelson. As cornerstones of the Bay Area music scene\, this duo brings a rich\, soulful texture to the patio: \nDewayne Oakley (Bass & Vocals): A veteran with over 50 years in the industry\, Oakley is a master of “city music with a country soul.” His deep\, resonant bass violin and gravelly\, heartfelt vocals bridge the gap between sophisticated jazz standards and raw\, acoustic blues. \nRalph Nelson (Guitar): Originally a drummer from a New York jazz family (his father’s dental patients included Max Roach and Sonny Rollins!)\, Nelson switched to guitar after falling under the spell of Jimi Hendrix. His style is firmly rooted in hard bop\, bringing a melodic versatility that dances effortlessly between blues grit and jazz precision. \nThe Experience\nThe Setting: Relax on the expansive\, heated sidewalk patio—one of the best people-watching spots in the city. The outdoor seating allows you to soak in the Pacific Heights sun while enjoying the acoustic warmth of live upright bass and hollow-body guitar. \nThe Menu: Enhance the rhythm with Chouquet’s signature bistro fare. Indulge in local favorites like the Moules Frites\, Croque Madame\, or a crisp glass of Sancerre from their extensive French-focused wine list. \nThe Atmosphere: This is an unpretentious yet polished affair\, perfect for a romantic date\, a sophisticated family brunch\, or a solo afternoon of “art and aperitifs.”

SUMMARY:Magic School Busk
DESCRIPTION:Experience the ultimate “living theater” of North Beach as The Magic School Busk takes up their weekly residency directly in front of The Red Window. Positioned at the vibrant\, sun-soaked corner of Stockton and Columbus\, this high-energy busking collective captures the spontaneous spirit of the neighborhood. \nThe performance is a masterclass in Street Swing and improvisational Jazz. Drawing from the “busking” tradition of New Orleans and the European “Hot Club” sound\, the ensemble specializes in acoustic music that is both technically brilliant and completely unpretentious. The line-up is fluid\, often featuring a “who’s who” of local instrumentalists who bring a “restless melodicism” to classic standards and upbeat\, toe-tapping originals. \nThe Magic School Busk is more than just a band; they are the neighborhood’s “resident joy-makers.” Because they perform on the street level\, the barrier between musician and audience disappears\, inviting passersby to stop\, dance\, and engage with the music in real-time. Whether you are enjoying a gin tonic on the Red Window’s outdoor patio or just walking by with a cannoli in hand\, the band provides an elite\, soulful soundtrack that defines the modern North Beach experience. \n\nAbout The Magic School Busk\nBorn from the city’s post-pandemic “street-side” revival\, The Magic School Busk is a collective of veteran Bay Area musicians dedicated to the art of public performance. They emphasize the “acoustic and the authentic\,” eschewing heavy amplification for the natural resonance of brass\, strings\, and woodwinds. Often featuring members from some of the city’s most popular jazz and swing outfits\, the “Busk” is celebrated for its ability to read a crowd and create a party out of thin air. They represent the best of San Francisco’s musical resilience—keeping the city’s culture loud\, proud\, and accessible to everyone on the street. \n

SUMMARY:Bluegrass Jam
DESCRIPTION:The Lucky Horseshoe hosts its long-standing Bluegrass Jam every Sunday afternoon. Unlike a typical circle jam\, this is a unique “performance” jam where musicians take to the stage to play into microphones for a live crowd. It’s an intermediate-to-advanced level session that brings together the best of the Bay Area’s roots and bluegrass community\, turning the Bernal Heights tavern into a high-energy honky-tonk for three hours every week. \n\n\nThe Performance Format: This session is specifically designed as a “on-stage” experience. Musicians are encouraged to step up to the mic\, fostering a professional yet welcoming atmosphere that bridges the gap between a casual rehearsal and a formal concert. \n\n\nSkill Level Requirements: The jam is tailored for intermediate players who are comfortable leading a vocal or instrumental song. The ability to “call a tune” and guide the ensemble is a key part of the ritual\, ensuring a high-quality listening experience for the patrons in the bar. \n\n\nA Neighborhood Tradition: Sponsored in part by the California Bluegrass Association (CBA)\, the jam is a quintessential Sunday social in Bernal Heights. The “Shoe” provides the perfect wood-paneled backdrop\, complete with strong drinks and a dog-friendly policy that welcomes the whole community. \n\n\nAcoustic & Unplugged: While the stage is amplified\, the heart of the music remains strictly acoustic\, celebrating the traditional sounds of banjo\, fiddle\, mandolin\, and upright bass in their purest forms. \n\n\n\nAbout the Organizer: California Bluegrass Association (CBA) \nThe Sunday Horseshoe Jam is part of the broader mission of the California Bluegrass Association\, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of bluegrass\, old-time\, and gospel music. By supporting weekly residencies like this one\, the CBA ensures that traditional American music remains a vibrant\, living part of San Francisco’s urban culture. Whether you are a seasoned picker looking for a stage or a fan of high-speed flatpicking\, these Sunday sessions offer an authentic slice of the “high lonesome sound” right on Cortland Avenue.

SUMMARY:Sherri Robert’s: “I’m Hip!” A Tribute to the Hep-Cats of Jazz
DESCRIPTION:“I’m Hip!”- A Tribute to the Hep-Cat Singer/Songwriters of Jazz: Matt Dennis\, Bobby Troup\, Dave Frishberg\, and Bob Dorough \nThey wrote the hippest songs of the times ( like “Route 66”\, “Angel Eyes”\, and that satirical anthem of the genre\,“I’m Hip!”\,) recorded by the era’s greatest stars\, including Nat King Cole\, Frank Sinatra\, and Billie Holiday. Yet they themselves were also unrepentant Lounge Lizards and Jazz Club Rats\, craving the occasional spotlight and itching to play the piano and croon their wares to their own finger popping audiences. \nDrawing a fascinating connection between the Bebop innovators of the 1940’s and 50’s\, the Beat generation that revered them\, and these hipster singer/songwriters who drank from the wellspring (not to mention the martini glasses!) of both\, Vocalist Sherri Roberts returns to Keys with a program that pays tribute to the “Craftsmen of Cool.” Their joyfully clever songs weren’t written for stage or sentimental films\, but for jazz singers to sing to jazz audiences- conversational\, witty\, blue-sy\, and hip! \nCalled “a superior bop and standards vocalist “ by the Los Angeles Times\, Sherri promises to bring her own distinct “West Coast Cool” vibe to this entertaining program. JazzTimes said it best: “How appropriate that Sherri Roberts opens with Bobby Troup’s “You’re Looking at Me.” For\, stylistically\, Roberts bears a significant resemblance to Mrs. Troup\, gin ’n’ satin seductress Julie London. But where London’s voice was pale and distant as a winter moon\, Roberts’ is all dappled sunshine…Enchanting.” \nDavid Udolf – piano \nChris Amberger- bass \nAkira Tana- drums
