This month\, the club gathers on the back lawn of Telegraph Hill to read the works of Joyce Mansour (1928–1986)\, the Egyptian-French author celebrated as the most significant woman poet of the second-generation Surrealist movement. \nThe Featured Poet: Known for her “convulsive” beauty and unabashed exploration of desire\, anatomy\, and the macabre\, Joyce Mansour’s work challenged the traditional boundaries of Surrealism. Her poetry is visceral\, darkly humorous\, and intensely psychological—perfectly suited for the atmospheric fog of a San Francisco evening. \n\nI have eaten your desire I have drunk your breath I have slept in your shadow I have lived in your death I have seen the white bird Of your soul in my hand I have heard the low song Of the sea in your land. \n\nFrom “Cris” (1953) \nJoyce Mansour’s work often focused on the subversion of domesticity and the exploration of the “female gothic.” Her writing was a cornerstone of the post-WWII Surrealist movement in Paris\, championed by André Breton himself. Reading her work at the base of Coit Tower—surrounded by the night fog and the mechanical hum of the city—highlights the dreamlike\, disorienting power of her prose. \nThe Ritual: The reading takes place outdoors on the lawn behind Coit Tower. Following a long-standing North Beach tradition\, poets and attendees pass a book of the featured poet’s work around the circle\, with an open invitation for anyone to step forward and read a favorite passage. \nThe Setting: Perched at the summit of Telegraph Hill\, the venue offers a 360-degree backdrop of the city lights and the bay. Born in 1937\, he began organizing bands in Louisiana at the age of twelve before serving in the U.S. Air Force and eventually settling in San Francisco. He has shared the stage and studio with some of the most iconic names in music history\, including: Ray Charles\, Carlos Santana\, Van Morrison\, Boz Scaggs\, and Elvin Bishop. \nHonored with the San Francisco Cabaret Gold Award for “Outstanding Jazz Musician” and a BAMMIE for “Best Reed Player\,” Broussard is a cornerstone of the West Coast jazz scene. DESCRIPTION:Seattle based guitarist Andy Coe (ACB\, Skerik Band\, McTuff) and drummer D’Vonne Lewis (Digable Planets\, McTuff\, Industrial Revelation) join forces with Portland keyboardist Galen Clark (Outer Orbit\, Trio Subtonic\, Sleater-Kinney) for a blend of pocket heavy organ trio funk and psychedelic mind bending groove music. \nThe resulting sound fuses high energy synth bass heavy funk and experimental electronic tinged jazz. D’Vonne Lewis is a Seattle based\, multi-award winning drummer who has toured\, performed and/or recorded with Digable Planets; Macklemore and Ryan Lewis; Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam; Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra; Christian McBride; George Porter of the Funky Meters; Skerik and many other national and international artists. \nSeattle based guitarist Andy Coe has performed in festivals around the world and many bands throughout the years including Rashied Ali Quintet\, McTuff\, Clinton Fearon and Boogie Brown Band\, Skerik’s Bandalabra\, Skerik Band\, Robert Walter’s 20th Congress\, Andy Coe Band\, Tuatara\, Barrett Martin Group\, Wil Blades Trio and many more. \nGalen Clark is a keyboardist\, songwriter\, producer\, and educator based in Portland\, OR. He leads the soul funk collective Outer Orbit and the genre bending group Trio Subtonic. He has toured and performed with artists such as Anna Tivel\, Sarah Clarke\, Sleater-Kinney\, A Love Electric\, Nicole McCabe\, Jessica Lurie and more. DESCRIPTION:The big guy from out West and larger than life energy (he’s also 6’5’) performer\, guitarist\, singer\, banjoist\, songwriter\, composer\, entertainer\, musical historian and teacher Mitch Polzak wears his heart on his sleeve and his playing in his heart. \nPolzak performs rockabilly and 60’s country music with the religious fervor of Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash and delivers a Honky Tonk ballad with the sincerity of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Mitch will bring a room to a fevered pitch of joyous energy on the dance floor and then tell you a story in a song like two old friends sitting at a kitchen table at midnight. \nHis virtuosic guitar skills and influences range from the blazing flying fingers of Joe Maphis \, Marty Stuart\, Roy Clark\, and Don Rich to the timeless dreamlike state of “Sleepwalk” by Santo and Johnny along with the vast valleys of deep rumbling twang associated with Duane Eddy. \nThere is not one singular definition of Polzak’s music but that is very specific to what he does. Being fluent in the musical languages of Country\, Rockabilly\, Honky Tonk\, The Bakersfield Sound\, Surf\, early Rock and Roll\, Bluegrass\, Cajun\, Blues\, and Truck Driving music gives Polzak the unique voice of the melting pot of the American musical experience. This is why he consistently connects with so many people directly at every show. \nPolzak’s abundant joy in communicating with people through music leaps off the stage through every fiber of his being. His near-constant genuine smile can be seen clear across the room and invites you in without any pretense or judgements. Some call him “The Honky Tonk Mister Rogers”! \nMake no mistake though. Underneath that smile is a deep and reverent respect for the history and integrity of the music and musicians who came before him and created the sounds and told their stories. \nJust as Waylon Jennings created his own outlaw sound\, as Johnny Cash could never be put in a box\, the full throttle intensity of Jerry Lee Lewis’s rock and roll grabs us and takes to a time and place\, Polzak’s live show has the unvarnished purity of the Bakersfield Sound paying homage to his California musical heroes Buck Owens\, Merle Haggard\, Wynn Stewart and Dwight Yokam. It’s a heaping helping\, but a Mitch Polzak show brings all of these musical flavors to the table in a potluck of American musical flavor. \nPolzak learned firsthand from some of his musical influences\, sharing the stage with legends like Don Maddox of The Maddox Bros. and Rose\, deeply respected contemporary and friend Deke Dickerspn\, The Ragin’ Cajun Doug Kershaw\, Rockabilly icons Joe Clay and Gene Summers\, former Bluegrass Boy and West Coast music pioneer Peter Rowan and Cajun greats Jimmy Breaux\, Andrew Carriere\, and Blake Miller.
