SUMMARY:Gaucho Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area band that combines the influence of gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music\, gutbucket blues and elements of ragtime. Their sound\, a uniquely American concoction\, blends instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for more. As founder\, guitarist\, and main composer Dave Ricketts says\, the band is “in love with the music of Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers\, as well as the stories\, the life styles and the foot steps of hundreds of other great jazz\, blues\, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950’s” \nGaucho has recorded eight albums\, tours regularly\, and has an increasing repertoire of over forty original tunes. Seven of their tunes are featured in the 2012 film “Trattoria”; one was chosen by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their website; and another is featured in the outtakes section of the Pixar DVD CARS 2. In 2018\, Gaucho got a song in the Hollywood Movie “Destination Wedding” starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. And two of Dave’s own compositions will be placed in a New York City based indie film\, “Stationed at Home\,” in 2022. \nLed by eminent guitarist\, Dave Ricketts\, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly twenty years\, and one of the busiest bands in the bay area playing 5 to 10 gigs a week. Together with virtuosos Rob Reich–accordion and Craig Venetresco–guitar\, superlative bassist Ari Munkres\, the honorable Leon Oakley–cornet\, and versatile percussionist Steve Apple\, these guys keep crowds moving with their beats and complex rhythms.

DESCRIPTION:Richard Howell:\nRichard Howell is an acclaimed jazz saxophonist\, composer\, and educator whose music celebrates diversity and unites the experience of all listeners. Howell has performed and recorded with numerous musical icons such as Etta James\, Ray Charles\, B.B. King\, Chaka Khan\, Maurice White\, and Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah. He has toured the United States\, Europe\, and Africa and has participated in the Newport and New Orleans Jazz Festivals. With his quartet\, Howell won an Izzie Award for his collaboration with choreographer Gregory Dawson at the Black Choreographers Festival. He has also produced several albums\, including those by the Afro-Brazilian ensemble Vivendo de Pão and jazz/spoken-word ensemble UpSurge!\, as well as those by the Mo’Rockin Project\, for which he also served as an arranger and soloist. Howell teaches through JazzTree Education\, and he is an intricate part of Oaktown Jazz Workshops. He exclusively performs on Cannonball Musical Instruments. \nAlex So:\nAs a recent graduate from UC Berkeley\, Alex has decided to put his STEM degree to work and pursue music full time. In his time at Cal\, he was brought back to many of his passions — fishing\, cooking\, and hiking — but most importantly\, music. By spending time with his close friends\, Isaac\, Henry\, Jed\, Miles\, and Richard\, as well as Myron Cohen and Richard Howell\, he was able to realize what the music really meant to him.

DESCRIPTION:The big guy from out West and larger than life energy (he’s also 6’5’) performer\, guitarist\, singer\, banjoist\, songwriter\, composer\, entertainer\, musical historian and teacher Mitch Polzak wears his heart on his sleeve and his playing in his heart. \nPolzak performs rockabilly and 60’s country music with the religious fervor of Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash and delivers a Honky Tonk ballad with the sincerity of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings. Mitch will bring a room to a fevered pitch of joyous energy on the dance floor and then tell you a story in a song like two old friends sitting at a kitchen table at midnight. \nHis virtuosic guitar skills and influences range from the blazing flying fingers of Joe Maphis \, Marty Stuart\, Roy Clark\, and Don Rich to the timeless dreamlike state of “Sleepwalk” by Santo and Johnny along with the vast valleys of deep rumbling twang associated with Duane Eddy. \nThere is not one singular definition of Polzak’s music but that is very specific to what he does. Being fluent in the musical languages of Country\, Rockabilly\, Honky Tonk\, The Bakersfield Sound\, Surf\, early Rock and Roll\, Bluegrass\, Cajun\, Blues\, and Truck Driving music gives Polzak the unique voice of the melting pot of the American musical experience. This is why he consistently connects with so many people directly at every show. \nPolzak’s abundant joy in communicating with people through music leaps off the stage through every fiber of his being. His near-constant genuine smile can be seen clear across the room and invites you in without any pretense or judgements. Some call him “The Honky Tonk Mister Rogers”! \nMake no mistake though. Underneath that smile is a deep and reverent respect for the history and integrity of the music and musicians who came before him and created the sounds and told their stories. \nJust as Waylon Jennings created his own outlaw sound\, as Johnny Cash could never be put in a box\, the full throttle intensity of Jerry Lee Lewis’s rock and roll grabs us and takes to a time and place\, Polzak’s live show has the unvarnished purity of the Bakersfield Sound paying homage to his California musical heroes Buck Owens\, Merle Haggard\, Wynn Stewart and Dwight Yokam.
