SUMMARY:Giggles and Licks
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a night of rhythmic mastery as Giggles and Licks takes the stage at Tupelo. This funky three-piece soul group is a favorite among the North Beach music community\, known for their ability to command a room with nothing more than raw talent and a deep\, infectious pocket. Stripping soul music down to its most potent elements\, this trio proves that you don’t need a large ensemble to create a massive\, danceable sound. \nThe Sound: Giggles and Licks specializes in Funky Soul and R&B. Their style is defined by “tasty guitar lickings\,” a driving bassline\, and a drummer who knows exactly how to hold the groove. Expect a set that leans into the pocket-heavy tradition of The Meters and Stax Records\, blended with soulful vocal arrangements that keep the energy bright and engaging. \nThe Trio Dynamic: As a classic power trio\, the band thrives on improvisational chemistry. Because there are only three musicians on stage\, there is an incredible amount of space for “licks” and solos\, making their performances a treat for those who appreciate technical instrumental skill alongside a good dance beat. \nThe “Giggles” Spirit: True to their name\, the band brings a lighthearted\, high-spirited energy to the stage. They are known for their “unpretentious mastery”—taking the music seriously while ensuring the audience has a blast. It is the perfect soundtrack for a rowdy night in North Beach. \nNo Cover: This performance is a “No Cover” event\, making it one of the best values for live music on Grant Avenue. It’s an ideal spot to grab a drink\, find a place on the dance floor\, and experience some of the city’s tightest soul musicians in an intimate setting. \n\nAbout Giggles and Licks\nGiggles and Licks is a staple of the San Francisco live circuit\, frequently appearing at venues that prioritize real\, musician-led grooves. While they maintain a playful stage presence\, the members are seasoned pros who have spent years backing various soul and funk projects across the Bay Area. Known for their “restless melodicism” and tight-knit arrangements\, they have built a reputation as a “musician’s band” that still knows how to throw a party for the masses.

SUMMARY:Magic School Busk
DESCRIPTION:The Magic School Busk holds weekly residency directly in front of The Red Window at the corner of Stockton and Columbus. This high‑energy busking collective has become one of North Beach’s unofficial “resident joy‑makers\,” blurring the line between band and audience as people pause\, sing along\, or dance on the sidewalk. Whether you are enjoying a gin tonic on the Red Window’s outdoor patio or just walking by with a cannoli in hand\, the Busk provides a genuine North Beach experience. \n\nAbout The Magic School Busk\nBorn from the city’s post-pandemic street-side revival\, The Magic School Busk is a collective of veteran Bay Area musicians dedicated to the art of public performance. Often featuring members from some of the city’s most popular jazz and swing outfits\, the “Busk” is celebrated for its ability to read a crowd and create a party out of thin air. They represent the best of San Francisco’s musical resilience—keeping the city’s culture loud\, proud\, and accessible to everyone on the street. \n

SUMMARY:Gaucho Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area band that combines the influence of gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music\, gutbucket blues and elements of ragtime. Their sound\, a uniquely American concoction\, blends instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for more. As founder\, guitarist\, and main composer Dave Ricketts says\, the band is “in love with the music of Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers\, as well as the stories\, the life styles and the foot steps of hundreds of other great jazz\, blues\, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950’s” \nGaucho has recorded eight albums\, tours regularly\, and has an increasing repertoire of over forty original tunes. Seven of their tunes are featured in the 2012 film “Trattoria”; one was chosen by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their website; and another is featured in the outtakes section of the Pixar DVD CARS 2. In 2018\, Gaucho got a song in the Hollywood Movie “Destination Wedding” starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. And two of Dave’s own compositions will be placed in a New York City based indie film\, “Stationed at Home\,” in 2022. \nLed by eminent guitarist\, Dave Ricketts\, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly twenty years\, and one of the busiest bands in the bay area playing 5 to 10 gigs a week. Together with virtuosos Rob Reich–accordion and Craig Venetresco–guitar\, superlative bassist Ari Munkres\, the honorable Leon Oakley–cornet\, and versatile percussionist Steve Apple\, these guys keep crowds moving with their beats and complex rhythms.

SUMMARY:Alison Shearer Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Called “a force on the rise” by JazzTimes magazine\, Alison Shearer’s explosive career hits refresh on what it means to be a jazz saxophonist today. Shearer is the kind of artist who is always asking “why.” She wants to find the similarities between seemingly disparate things\, and in doing so hopefully find something human in everything. Shearer has performed across the United States\, Europe\, Canada\, and South Asia\, both with her quartet and as a member of Red Baraat and Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East. She has performed with notable artists such as Kurt Elling\, Nate Smith\, Charlie Hunter\, Ben Platt\, Billy Porter\, Kelly O’Hara\, Jason Robert Brown\, Josh Groban\, and the wonderful Orchestra of St. Luke’s. She has appeared on both NPR’s Tiny Desk and KEXP with Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East. \nAlison gathered her eponymous Quartet in 2015. She writes the group’s music\, and their soulful\, melodic take on fusion found immediate acclaim in New York City\, where the group got its start. Their first record\, View From Above\, was named one of NPR’s Top Ten Albums of the Year and was an Editor’s Choice in Jazz Times. Her most recent release In The Garden (Pinch Records) came out on October 10\, 2025 and was named a best October release by NPR\, which led to an interview with Alison Stewart on WNYC. \nAlison premiered her first ever chamber work for the classical stage in April 2024 to a sold-out audience at USCB Center for the Arts in Beaufort\, South Carolina.
