SUMMARY:Gaucho Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area band that combines the influence of gypsy jazz of 1930’s Europe with the rhythmic drive and collective improvisation of New Orleans swing music\, gutbucket blues and elements of ragtime. Their sound\, a uniquely American concoction\, blends instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor that keep their audience coming back for more. As founder\, guitarist\, and main composer Dave Ricketts says\, the band is “in love with the music of Louis Armstrong\, Fats Waller and Jimmie Rodgers\, as well as the stories\, the life styles and the foot steps of hundreds of other great jazz\, blues\, country and rock musicians that created the sound of American Music from roughly 1900-1950’s” \nGaucho has recorded eight albums\, tours regularly\, and has an increasing repertoire of over forty original tunes. Seven of their tunes are featured in the 2012 film “Trattoria”; one was chosen by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for their website; and another is featured in the outtakes section of the Pixar DVD CARS 2. In 2018\, Gaucho got a song in the Hollywood Movie “Destination Wedding” starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. And two of Dave’s own compositions will be placed in a New York City based indie film\, “Stationed at Home\,” in 2022. \nLed by eminent guitarist\, Dave Ricketts\, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly twenty years\, and one of the busiest bands in the bay area playing 5 to 10 gigs a week. Together with virtuosos Rob Reich–accordion and Craig Venetresco–guitar\, superlative bassist Ari Munkres\, the honorable Leon Oakley–cornet\, and versatile percussionist Steve Apple\, these guys keep crowds moving with their beats and complex rhythms.

SUMMARY:Cyril Guiraud Trio
DESCRIPTION:Experience a night of “Coltrane-inspired” innovation as the Cyril Guiraud Jazz Quartet takes the stage at The Royale. French-born saxophonist Cyril Guiraud is a master of the tenor and soprano sax\, known for a sound that bridges the gap between classic European elegance and the raw\, experimental energy of the San Francisco jazz scene. This quartet performance promises an evening of high-fidelity improvisation and boundary-pushing contemporary jazz. \nThe Sound: Guiraud’s style is defined by a “modern\, tender touch” mixed with complex\, driving rhythms. His quartet often features a blend of acoustic warmth and subtle electronic textures\, moving from melodic bebop explorations to adventurous\, avant-garde improvisations. \nThe Ensemble: The quartet typically showcases some of the Bay Area’s most forward-thinking instrumentalists\, often including Ian McArdle on piano/keys\, Gary Johnson on bass\, and Isaac Schwartz on drums. Together\, they create a “restless melodicism” that keeps the audience engaged in every unexpected turn. \nA Global Perspective: Having collaborated with legends like George Clinton\, Kenny Garrett\, and Michel Petrucciani\, Guiraud brings a world-class pedigree to the intimate stage of The Royale. His music is a reflection of his dual-life in San Francisco and Paris\, resulting in a cosmopolitan jazz experience. \nThe Royale Atmosphere: Located on the corner of Post and Hyde\, The Royale offers a vintage\, speakeasy-style setting that perfectly complements Guiraud’s sophisticated sound. With its dark wood\, classic cocktails\, and attentive “listening room” vibe\, it is one of the city’s premier hidden gems for live jazz. \n\nAbout Cyril Guiraud\nCyril Guiraud is a saxophonist\, composer\, and entrepreneur who has become a vital figure in the Bay Area’s creative landscape. Beyond his work as a performer at venues like SFJAZZ and the Monterey Jazz Festival\, he is the founder of doubleOone\, a music startup that brings audiences into the recording studio for experiential sessions. His 2025 trio album\, Outer Reach\, and his recent duo work with pianist Omree Gal-Oz\, The Single Petal of a Rose\, highlight his versatility and his commitment to evolving the jazz tradition through both performance and technology.

SUMMARY:Alison Shearer Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Called “a force on the rise” by JazzTimes magazine\, Alison Shearer’s explosive career hits refresh on what it means to be a jazz saxophonist today. Shearer is the kind of artist who is always asking “why.” She wants to find the similarities between seemingly disparate things\, and in doing so hopefully find something human in everything. Shearer has performed across the United States\, Europe\, Canada\, and South Asia\, both with her quartet and as a member of Red Baraat and Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East. She has performed with notable artists such as Kurt Elling\, Nate Smith\, Charlie Hunter\, Ben Platt\, Billy Porter\, Kelly O’Hara\, Jason Robert Brown\, Josh Groban\, and the wonderful Orchestra of St. Luke’s. She has appeared on both NPR’s Tiny Desk and KEXP with Sunny Jain’s Wild Wild East. \nAlison gathered her eponymous Quartet in 2015. She writes the group’s music\, and their soulful\, melodic take on fusion found immediate acclaim in New York City\, where the group got its start. Their first record\, View From Above\, was named one of NPR’s Top Ten Albums of the Year and was an Editor’s Choice in Jazz Times. Her most recent release In The Garden (Pinch Records) came out on October 10\, 2025 and was named a best October release by NPR\, which led to an interview with Alison Stewart on WNYC. \nAlison premiered her first ever chamber work for the classical stage in April 2024 to a sold-out audience at USCB Center for the Arts in Beaufort\, South Carolina. The piece\, “Apollosis”\, commissioned by USCB Chamber Music and written for alto saxophone and piano sextet\, got rave reviews and kicked off a flurry of engagements and additional commissions. In 2025 Alison got a record deal with Pinch Records and a second commission from USCB Chamber Music – this time for alto saxophone\, marimba\, piano\, and voice. ROCO Symphony in Houston Texas commissioned Shearer’s first orchestral work\, which will be a saxophone concert based on the abstract artwork of her late father\, acclaimed LIFE photojournalist\, John Shearer. The piece will be premiered at the opening of their 2026 – 2027 season. \nAlison is a passionate teacher and has maintained a private studio for 18 years. She is on faculty at the Jazz at Lincoln Center High School Jazz Academy and at Jazz House Kids\, where her work with young students fosters community building through jazz education. Alison is an endorsing artist with D’Addario Reeds. \nBand lineup:\nAlison Shearer\, saxes and flute\nKevin Bernstein\, keys\nMarty Kenney\, bass\nDiego Ramirez\, drums

Since this time he has enjoyed a diverse career\, having shared the stage with artist such as Paquito D’Rivera\, Stanley Clarke\, Dionne Warwick\, Bakithi Kumalo\, Chaka Khan\, Kool and the Gang\, Andy Narell\, Ray Holman\, Lotus\, Dopapod\, Tauk\, and many others. Since relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2022\, he has launched his new project\, Sky Daddy\, combining his loves of jazz funk\, latin jazz\, and steelband music into an exciting modern sound. \nSky Daddy features Aschman on trumpet and steelpan\, Bay Area staple Tony Peebles on saxophones\, Blood Sweat and Tears’ sensational pianist Adam Klipple on jazz organ\, and young phenom Henry Plumb on drumset. Aschman’s unique original compositions and arrangements call to mind groups like the Dave Holland Quintet\, Kneebody\, Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters\, and Snarky Puppy. While employing odd meters and interesting harmonies\, their sound never fails to exude the excitement and groove of Philadelphia’s funky and gritty music scene.

SUMMARY:Earl Thomas The Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Earl Thomas Bluestory Telling A New Story About the Blues Step into Bluestory — the electrifying new production by Earl Thomas \nCreated exclusively for the Biscuits & Blues intimate cabaret setting\, Thomas strips the blues to its bare soul and rebuilds it as pure theatre. \nWith acoustic slide guitar\, stand up bass\, drums\, and harmonica\, Thomas creates a sound that is raw\, refined\, and irresponsible. \nFrom the haunting cries of Robert Johnson\, the grit of Jimmy Reed and Elmore James\, the power of Muddy Waters\, and the elegance of B.B. King\, Bluestory is the living evolution of the blues — culminating in Thomas’s own acclaimed original compositions; the songs covered by Etta James\, Solomon Burke\, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins\, and Sir Tom Jones. \nPart confession\, part revelation — Bluestory is more than a concert. It’s Earl Thomas reimagining the blues as story\, spirit\, and song. This is Earl Thomas at his absolute best and this is the show not to miss.

SUMMARY:Barbara Soul & Bridge Band
DESCRIPTION:Experience a soulful start to the new year as Barbara & Soul Bridge Band return to the Sheba Piano Lounge on Saturday\, January 31st\, from 7:30 PM – 10:30 PM. This ensemble is celebrated for their “bridge-building” approach to music\, weaving together the threads of classic soul\, rhythmic jazz\, and contemporary R&B. Anchored by Barbara’s warm\, emotive vocals\, the band creates an atmosphere that is as much about human connection as it is about musical mastery. \n\n\nThe Sound: The Soul Bridge Band lives up to its name by blending classic soul grooves with jazz-inflected harmonies. Their repertoire often features uplifting anthems and soulful reimagining of favorites that focus on themes of unity and peace. Expect tight instrumentation\, melodic basslines\, and vocals that radiate a sense of “deep\, quiet joy.” \n\n\nA Saturday Night Sanctuary: While many weekend sets in the Fillmore aim for high-octane volume\, Barbara & Soul Bridge offer a more “contemplative yet groovy” experience. It’s the perfect soundtrack for those who want to feel the music without losing the ability to share a conversation over dinner. \n\n\nThe Sheba Ambiance: The lounge’s signature amber lighting and roaring fireplace provide a cozy\, tropical-inspired sanctuary for the band’s organic sound. The intimate stage allows for a “living room” feel\, where the audience and performers share a singular\, rhythmic breath. \n\n\nNo Cover\, Pure Spirit: In keeping with the Sheba tradition\, this performance is open to all with no cover charge. It’s a quintessential San Francisco Saturday night: authentic music\, exceptional Ethiopian cuisine\, and a community-driven spirit that honors the Fillmore’s legacy. \n\n\n\nAbout Barbara & Soul Bridge\nThe Soul Bridge Band is a collective of Bay Area musicians dedicated to “music as a source of healing and harmony.” Led by Barbara\, whose background often touches on spiritual and contemplative musical traditions\, the group focuses on the power of the ensemble. They are known for their collaborative spirit\, often featuring guest instrumentalists who add layers of violin\, flute\, or percussion to their soul-jazz foundation. Their residency at Sheba has become a cherished “reset” for the local community\, offering a sophisticated and heartfelt alternative to the traditional club scene.

SUMMARY:Cliff Meyers & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Comstock Saloon continues its tradition of hosting the city’s most compelling musical “finds” with Cliff Meyers & Friends. A fixture of the Bay Area’s more experimental and groove-heavy jazz circles\, Meyers brings a collective energy to the room that transforms the historic saloon into a vibrant\, modern listening space. \nThe Music: Cliff Meyers is known for a sound that leans into Jazz-Funk and Soul-Jazz. His “Friends” typically include a rotating cast of top-tier local session players—musicians who have spent time in the trenches of the Mission and North Beach scenes. Expect deep\, locked-in grooves\, extended improvisational jams\, and a “restless melodicism” that keeps the set unpredictable. \nThe Performance: Unlike a standard jazz trio\, a “Cliff Meyers & Friends” set often feels like a curated jam session among masters. The music is kinetic and conversational\, moving from tight\, soulful arrangements to open-ended sonic explorations that fill every corner of Comstock’s high-ceilinged room. \nThe Setting: There is a unique friction in hearing Meyers’ contemporary\, groove-oriented sound inside a bar that looks exactly as it did in 1907. The polished wood and dim\, golden lighting provide a sultry\, noir-ish backdrop for the band’s electric energy. \nThe Experience: This is the ideal spot for those who want their jazz with a side of grit and soul. Whether you’re sitting at the bar with a Pisco Punch or tucked into a booth for dinner\, the band provides a high-fidelity soundtrack that is as intellectually stimulating as it is physically infectious.
