SUMMARY:Matei Predescu
DESCRIPTION:Matei Predescu is a Romanian-American pianist\, keyboardist\, composer\, and improviser whose omnivorous musical pursuits range from their modern jazz and creative music project “Fictions/Ficțiuni” to experimental noise and electronic ambient projects. \nBorn and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area\, Matei’s original music explores themes of cultural memory\, generational trauma\, and Romanian American identity through the intersection of Black American music\, Eastern European folk music traditions\, and experimental music. \nMatei studied jazz piano and improvised music at Oberlin Conservatory with Dan Wall and Dana Jessen\, and received tutelage from luminary musicians like Billy Hart\, Gary Bartz\, Eddie Henderson\, as well as interdisciplinary mentorship from mixed media artist Johnny Coleman. Matei’s work is also deeply rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration with filmmakers and visual artists\, including forays into film scoring and improvised dance accompaniment. \nAs a composer\, Predescu’s music explores the extremes between density and negative space. Complex metric structures and poignant lyricism are woven together to create engaging narratives that unfurl in unexpected directions. Predescu’s improvisatory approach finds common ground between the distinct styles of McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor\, Geri Allen and Fred Hersch\, while staying firmly rooted in the blues aesthetics of Thelonious Monk. Above all\, Predescu seeks creative inspiration from the classic Romanian concept of “haz de necaz”\, or laughing in the face of misfortune with a sense of irreverence\, wit\, and steadfastness. \nMatei Predescu | Piano\nNick Panoutsos | Bass\nMiles Turk | Drums

SUMMARY:Earl Thomas The Storyteller
DESCRIPTION:Earl Thomas Bluestory Telling A New Story About the Blues Step into Bluestory — the electrifying new production by Earl Thomas \nCreated exclusively for the Biscuits & Blues intimate cabaret setting\, Thomas strips the blues to its bare soul and rebuilds it as pure theatre. \nWith acoustic slide guitar\, stand up bass\, drums\, and harmonica\, Thomas creates a sound that is raw\, refined\, and irresponsible. \nFrom the haunting cries of Robert Johnson\, the grit of Jimmy Reed and Elmore James\, the power of Muddy Waters\, and the elegance of B.B. King\, Bluestory is the living evolution of the blues — culminating in Thomas’s own acclaimed original compositions; the songs covered by Etta James\, Solomon Burke\, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins\, and Sir Tom Jones. \nPart confession\, part revelation — Bluestory is more than a concert. It’s Earl Thomas reimagining the blues as story\, spirit\, and song. This is Earl Thomas at his absolute best and this is the show not to miss.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther McCoy: The Funk That Stole Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Martin Luther McCoy is a visionary soul singer who blends traditional jazz\, funk\, rock\, and soul music into a fluid\, electrifying sound. His vibe is a liquid-cooled\, versatile funk. His powerful voice has led him to perform as the frontman for SFJAZZ Collective and The Roots and was recently featured at Mt. Tamalpais Sound Summit’s tribute to Sly and the Family Stone. Back at Black Cat SF for The Funk That Stole Christmas is Martin and his electric band. He is perhaps best known for his breakout role as a Jimi Hendrix-inspired character in the acclaimed film Across the Universe (Sony/Columbia)\, directed by Julie Taymor.
