SUMMARY:Love After Dark: Velvet\, Fire\, Smoke ft. Courtney Knott\, James Small & Jonah Levine
DESCRIPTION:Turn down the lights and lean in. This Valentine’s Day weekend\, Black Cat sets the mood with a sultry\, genre-blurring night led by Courtney Knott\, James “StickNasty” Small\, and Jonah Levine: three artists whose chemistry\, groove\, and emotional depth are made for romance after dark. Courtney Knott\, a classically trained vocalist\, composer\, producer\, and multidisciplinary artist whose voice moves effortlessly between velvet-soft intimacy and cinematic power. A Berklee graduate who has performed everywhere from the White House to Boston Symphony Hall\, Knott brings a sensual\, otherworldly presence shaped by her work in music\, narrative\, and performance. Her sound is lush\, expressive\, and deeply felt and invites you to slow dance with the shadows. Driving the heartbeat of the night is James “StickNasty” Small\, an Oakland-based drummer\, producer\, and actor known for his unshakeable pocket and impeccable taste. A longtime collaborator of 3x Grammy winner Fantastic Negrito\, Small blends deep groove with restraint and intention\, creating rhythms that feel both primal and tender—the kind that keep bodies close and heads nodding all night long. Rounding out the trio is Jonah Levine\, a composer\, producer\, and sonic architect whose work spans jazz\, soul\, hip-hop\, and global influences. With credits alongside Beyoncé\, Stevie Wonder\, Jay-Z\, Jhene Aiko\, and more\, Levine brings a romantic emotional palette shaped by themes of love\, loss\, and vulnerability. His playing is spacious\, textured\, and raw—perfectly tuned to Valentine’s energy. Together\, these artists create an immersive late-night experience: sensual grooves\, lush harmonies\, and slow-burning improvisation designed for lovers\, friends\, and anyone craving connection. Whether you’re celebrating romance or simply the beauty of feeling something deeply\, this is Valentine’s at Black Cat—intimate\, intoxicating\, and unforgettable. SUMMARY:Magic School Busk
DESCRIPTION:The Magic School Busk holds weekly residency directly in front of The Red Window at the corner of Stockton and Columbus. This high‑energy busking collective has become one of North Beach’s unofficial “resident joy‑makers\,” blurring the line between band and audience as people pause\, sing along\, or dance on the sidewalk. Whether you are enjoying a gin tonic on the Red Window’s outdoor patio or just walking by with a cannoli in hand\, the Busk provides a genuine North Beach experience. \n\nAbout The Magic School Busk\nBorn from the city’s post-pandemic street-side revival\, The Magic School Busk is a collective of veteran Bay Area musicians dedicated to the art of public performance. They emphasize the acoustic and the authentic\, eschewing heavy amplification for the natural resonance of brass\, strings\, and woodwinds. Often featuring members from some of the city’s most popular jazz and swing outfits\, the “Busk” is celebrated for its ability to read a crowd and create a party out of thin air. They represent the best of San Francisco’s musical resilience—keeping the city’s culture loud\, proud\, and accessible to everyone on the street. \n

SUMMARY:Katy Stephan
DESCRIPTION:Katy Stephan’s residency at Comstock Saloon turns the room into a small\, candlelit listening space. At the piano she blends jazz‑inflected originals with reimagined standards and art‑pop tunes\, her clear\, expressive voice sitting right on top of the clink of glassware and low conversation. It’s an intimate\, song‑forward set that feels equally at home as a soundscape for cocktails or as a close‑up performance for guests who want to lean in and really listen.

SUMMARY:Live Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Paris 75’s rotating jazz bands turn this corner of North Beach into a little slice of the Left Bank. Each week a different small ensemble—trios\, quartets\, and vocal groups—leans into swing\, standards\, and café‑style jazz that pairs naturally with wine\, cocktails\, charcuterie\, and late‑night conversation. The vibe is intimate and unhurried: close‑up solos\, brushed drums\, and melodies that drift through the room while guests linger over another round.

SUMMARY:Katy Stephan
DESCRIPTION:Kathy Stephan brings torch songs\, swing standards\, and a touch of twang to the Comstock Saloon’s polished‑but‑raucous barroom. Her voice leans into the room’s natural reverb\, floating over brushed drums\, piano\, and upright bass while cocktails clink and the lights stay low. Expect classic tunes\, a few deep‑cut surprises\, and the kind of between‑song banter that makes the band feel like part of the crowd. It’s the perfect soundtrack for settling into a leather booth\, ordering something stirred\, and letting the night stretch out a little longer than you planned.

SUMMARY:Graham Messer Trio
DESCRIPTION:At just 23 years of age\, Graham is a young gun making a name for himself in the world of Jazz today. A dyed-in-the-wool bebop pianist\, he seeks to uphold the tradition of Bud Powell\, Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Kenny Dorham\, and Barry Harris\, among others\, and treats their music equally as soul food\, and as ground for intellectual exploration\, fertile as any music of the great European masters of the last 400 years. \nArmed with a rigorous classical training\, he has to quote one local great\, “made a substantive contribution towards raising the ‘mean tempo’ of the tunes played within this sector of the S.F. jazz scene”\, though he feels just as at home on a contemplative ballad or a slow blues. \nYou may find him performing under either one of his apt pseudonyms: Dud Powell or Barely Harris.

His playing is spacious\, textured\, and raw—perfectly tuned to Valentine’s energy. \nTogether\, these artists create an immersive late-night experience: sensual grooves\, lush harmonies\, and slow-burning improvisation designed for lovers\, friends\, and anyone craving connection. Whether you’re celebrating romance or simply the beauty of feeling something deeply\, this is Valentine’s at Black Cat—intimate\, intoxicating\, and unforgettable. \nBand Lineup:\nCourtney Knott\, vocals\nJames Small\, drums\nJonah Levine\, keys

SUMMARY:Stella Heath and her Trio
DESCRIPTION:Niel Fontano | Piano\nDaniel Fabricant | Bass\nRobby Elfman | Reeds\nSpike Klein | Drums\nStella Heath | Vocals \nSinging since the age of eight\, Stella feels wholly blessed to be able to express herself through music and song\, and to carry forth the torch of Jazz Music that she loves so dearly. She grew up in the North San Francisco Bay Area\, steeped in her mother’s eclectic music collection; some of her early musical influences were Louis Armstrong\, Edith Piaf\, Buena Vista Social Club\, Billie Holiday\, Tom Waits\, Bod Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald. Her education was primarily in Acting at Interlochen Arts Academy and Syracuse University\, where she received a degree in classical acting and cultural geography. She spent many years as a Shakespearian actress based out of New York City\, where she began to sing Jazz again with the incredible Marjorie Eliot in Harlem. She moved to her home state of California in 2014\, and began playing music full time\, starting the eclectic gypsy jazz inspired band\, Bandjango Collectif\, a wild around the edges band that mixes French Jazz Manouche\, New Orleans Hot Swing\, and Eclectic Global Folk\, allowing Stella to explore and play in vocal improvisation\, different languages\, and song interpretation. In 2019 she debuted The Billie Holiday Project\, a historically centered musical tribute to the great Lady Day; The show was met with great success and quickly moved into some of the Bay Area’s most reputable listening venues and began touring nationally.
