SUMMARY:Bluegrass Jam
DESCRIPTION:The Lucky Horseshoe hosts its long-standing Bluegrass Jam every Sunday afternoon. Unlike a typical circle jam\, this is a unique “performance” jam where musicians take to the stage to play into microphones for a live crowd. It’s an intermediate-to-advanced level session that brings together the best of the Bay Area’s roots and bluegrass community\, turning the Bernal Heights tavern into a high-energy honky-tonk for three hours every week. \n\n\nThe Performance Format: This session is specifically designed as a “on-stage” experience. Musicians are encouraged to step up to the mic\, fostering a professional yet welcoming atmosphere that bridges the gap between a casual rehearsal and a formal concert. \n\n\nSkill Level Requirements: The jam is tailored for intermediate players who are comfortable leading a vocal or instrumental song. The ability to “call a tune” and guide the ensemble is a key part of the ritual\, ensuring a high-quality listening experience for the patrons in the bar. \n\n\nA Neighborhood Tradition: Sponsored in part by the California Bluegrass Association (CBA)\, the jam is a quintessential Sunday social in Bernal Heights. The “Shoe” provides the perfect wood-paneled backdrop\, complete with strong drinks and a dog-friendly policy that welcomes the whole community. \n\n\nAcoustic & Unplugged: While the stage is amplified\, the heart of the music remains strictly acoustic\, celebrating the traditional sounds of banjo\, fiddle\, mandolin\, and upright bass in their purest forms. \n\n\n\nAbout the Organizer: California Bluegrass Association (CBA) \nThe Sunday Horseshoe Jam is part of the broader mission of the California Bluegrass Association\, a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of bluegrass\, old-time\, and gospel music. By supporting weekly residencies like this one\, the CBA ensures that traditional American music remains a vibrant\, living part of San Francisco’s urban culture. Whether you are a seasoned picker looking for a stage or a fan of high-speed flatpicking\, these Sunday sessions offer an authentic slice of the “high lonesome sound” right on Cortland Avenue.

SUMMARY:The Good Bad
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for a foot-stomping night as San Francisco’s own The Good Bad brings their explosive brand of bluegrass to Tupelo. A staple of the West Coast “Newgrass” scene since 2010\, this five-piece ensemble delivers a high-velocity take on traditional string music. Known for their tight vocal harmonies and rowdy stage presence\, they turn the standard bluegrass session into a full-blown North Beach party. \n\n\nThe Sound: The Good Bad specializes in Progressive Bluegrass (Newgrass). While they use traditional instruments—mandolin\, banjo\, fiddle\, and dobro—their approach is pure rock-and-roll energy. Expect lightning-fast picking\, “raucous” vocal arrangements\, and a “good time” sound designed to be paired with a dash of whiskey. \n\n\nThe Lineup: The band features a versatile group of local pickers: \n\n\nAaron Lanes: Mandolin & Guitar \nThomas Beneduci: Guitar & Dobro \nPeter Dominici: Banjo \nDave Pascoe: Fiddle \nPaul Geoghan: Bass \n\n\nBluegrass in the Beach: Tupelo’s intimate\, red-lit stage is the perfect venue for the band’s acoustic power. Without the barriers of a large festival stage\, you can catch the “unique character blend” and technical mastery of the group up close. \n\n\nNo Cover Hoedown: In a neighborhood known for high-priced entertainment\, this “Good Ol’ Fashioned Ho-Down” remains No Cover. It’s a rare chance to see a band that has shared stages with scene favorites like The Brothers Comatose and The Lil’ Smokies for free. \n\n\n\nAbout The Good Bad\nHailing from the foggy hills of San Francisco\, The Good Bad has spent over a decade honing a sound that pushes the boundaries of traditional bluegrass while staying rooted in its acoustic soul. They are veterans of the California festival circuit\, known for their ability to captivate audiences of all ages with their “uniquely rustic tones” and high-energy performance style. Whether they are playing a local tavern or a massive stage like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass\, their mission is always the same: to move the audience and keep the spirit of the string band alive in the modern era.

SUMMARY:The Far Out Johnnies
DESCRIPTION:The Far Out Johnnies are a San Francisco-based band honoring the legacy of John Hartford. With deep roots in the Bay Area bluegrass scene\, the band members have diverse musical backgrounds\, having played with many popular bands. This variety fuels their exploration of Hartford’s eclectic catalog\, from the iconic Aereo-Plain album to fiddle tunes and beyond. Band members include Dave Berry (mandolin\, lead and harmony vocals)\, Marques Saint Ignatius (guitar\, lead and harmony vocals)\, Jordan Klein (banjo\, lead and harmony vocals)\, Dave Watson (fiddle\, lead and harmony vocals)\, and Clare Simmons (bass\, lead and harmony vocals).  John is quoted as saying “There’s no substitute for getting out there and doing it.” which describes the band’s all-in approach and probably why the rehearsals are as much fun as the gigs.

SUMMARY:Mitch Polzak & the Royal Deuces
DESCRIPTION:Get ready as Bird & Beckett Books and Records welcomes the “Real Deal” himself\, Mitch Polzak. Whether he’s flat-picking a guitar or tearing through a banjo solo\, Polzak brings a circus-sized energy (literally—he’s a Ringling Bros. descendant) to the most intimate bookstore stage in San Francisco. \nThe Performance\nThe Music: Mitch Polzak and the Royal Deuces are a powerhouse trio that blurs the lines between Rockabilly\, Western Swing\, and high-energy Bluegrass. Polzak\, a 2024 Western Swing Hall of Fame inductee\, is a virtuoso who performs with the “religious fervor” of Jerry Lee Lewis and the storytelling sincerity of Merle Haggard. \nSpecial Guest: For this Sunday’s session\, the band is joined by legendary pedal steel master Joe Goldmark. Expect shimmering\, cosmic country textures to weave through Polzak’s sharp guitar leads. \nThe Atmosphere: This is a “listening room” in the purest sense. With a capacity of just 35 people\, you aren’t just watching a show; you’re sitting in the middle of a high-fidelity jam session surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. \nThe Setting\nThe Venue: Bird & Beckett is a Glen Park landmark. It’s a space where the scent of old paper meets the heat of a vintage Fender amp. The shop’s Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project ensures that serious musicians like Polzak have a home to preserve the “Old San Francisco” spirit of improvisation. \nThe Ritual: This is a BYOB environment. Grab a bottle from the neighborhood market and settle in for a neighborhood party vibe that feels more like a private salon than a public concert.

SUMMARY:The Good Bad\, Meredith Edgar and Rob Summerlin
DESCRIPTION:The Good Bad was formed in San Francisco\, California in 2010 by Aaron Lanes and Thom Beneudici. Over the past decade and a half\, The Good Bad have shared stages with The Brothers Comatose\, The Lil Smokies\, Front Country\, Della Mae\, toured Europe\, played prestigious festivals like Winter Wondergrass and performed at countless weddings\, parties and events across the Bay Area and beyond. The Good Bad utilizes original songwriting while continually employing traditional and contemporary bluegrass in addition to pop and Top 40 favorites. Three part harmonies\, instrumental virtuosity and high octane string music are hallmarks of The Good Bad. The five piece band currently includes Aaron Lanes (mandolin\, guitar\, vocals)\, Peter Domenici (banjo\, vocals)\, Tom Conneely (guitar\, vocals)\, Gabe Wheaton (fiddle\, vocals) and Noah Zisser (bass\, vocals). \nMeredith Edgar is a San Francisco-born\, Bay-Area-raised singer-songwriter with a voice that Cindy Emch of Secret Emchy Society says “sounds like she stepped out of the starring singer role in a David Lynch movie.” A lifelong singer and performer\, she started writing and playing originals at open mics when she was just 14. Over the years she’s honed her unique sound through the influence of such musical artists as Billie Holiday\, Jolie Holland\, Fiona Apple\, Morphine\, Julie London\, and Gillian Welch. \nEdgar’s songs have been described as melancholic\, melodic\, and deeply personal. Upon hearing the song “Tidal Waves\,” Ari Notis\, staff writer for Kotaku\, said that Edgar’s “buttery vocals” affected him far more than he was prepared for. Her songs\, says singer-songwriter Paul Griffiths “are a haunting\, melodic mix of passion and melancholy” in which she “fearlessly explores feelings and reactions to her own times and artfully makes them universal.” Edgar has shared bills with acts such as Mark Eitzel\, Noelle Fiore (Noelle & the Deserters)\, Andrés Miguel Cervantes\, Brian Belknap\, Greg Hoy\, Minor Birds\, The Pine Box Boys\, Paula Frazer & Tarnation\, Jacob Aranda\, The Crooked Jades\, The Waybacks\, and more. \nRob Summerlin is an award-winning filmmaker\, illustrator\, songwriter\, artist. He mostly writes songs about eccentric characters on the fringe of society. \n

Combining elements of hard-hitting funk\, greasy soul\, vintage R&B\, soul jazz\, and more you can be sure that this eight-piece unit is committed to the groove in all its shapes and forms.\nConsisting of some of the best Bay Area musicians and led by the heartfelt lead vocals of Tori Roze\, The Humidors have established themselves over their tenure as one of the West Coast’s premier funk & soul bands and are committed to spreading the Gospel of Funk to dance floors everywhere. Having shared the stage with acts such as Dumpstaphunk\, The New Mastersounds\, The Meters’ Leo Nocentelli\, Shuggie Otis\, and the late\, great Bernie Worrell\, The Humidors are in their element on stage. Bursts and washes of B3\, punchy horns\, chugging percussion\, thumping bass\, and burning guitar leads all interweave in an infectious polyrhythmic stew. \nThis band of troubadours has developed a sound that pulls from a melting pot of old-school and modern influences\, yet is always rooted in a commitment to ego-less playing that embraces the ensemble approach to funk. \nThe Humidors are Justin Abee (percussion)\, Patrick Cress (Baritone Sax)\, Rudo Kinard (bass)\, Mike Mulqueen (guitar/vocals)\, Scott Okamoto (Trombone)\, Tori Roze (lead vocals) Stevie Utstein (keyboards/organ)\, and Adam Willis (drums). \n  \nDIRTY CELLO \n(9:20PM ’til 11:15PM) \nDirty Cello – cello like you’ve never heard before! Combine the virtuosic wail of Jimi Hendrix\, the soul of BB King\, and the fire of Bill Monroe\, and add a whole lot of cello\, and you get the Dirty Cello band. With wild vocals\, and world class cello playing\, the group is led by vivacious cross-over cellist\, Rebecca Roudman. \nDirty Cello performs all over the world\, from Iceland to Israel\, from Scottish castles to underground caves presenting an energetic and wild show that’s been described as\, \n“Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky\, carnival\, romantic\, sexy\, tangled\, electric\, fiercely rhythmic\, and textured\, and only occasionally classical.” by Oakland Magazine.
