FreeExperience a stellar evening of world-class jazz as Eugene Pliner & Friends take the stage at Sheba Piano Lounge on Thursday, January 29th, from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM. A veteran of the international jazz circuit, pianist Eugene Pliner is known for his technical brilliance and “restless melodicism.” This residency offers a dynamic, ever-changing musical conversation, where Pliner is joined by a rotating cast of the Bay Area’s finest instrumentalists to explore the deep reaches of bop, swing, and original composition.
-
The Sound: Pliner’s style is a masterful blend of European classical precision and American jazz soul. Expect a set that ranges from driving, high-energy bebop to tender, lyrical ballads. As “Friends” implies a varying lineup, each performance is a unique improvisational journey shaped by the chemistry of the nightly ensemble.
-
The “Riga to San Francisco” Journey: Originally from Riga, Latvia, and trained at the New England Conservatory, Pliner brings a global perspective to his music. His work often reflects his deep study under jazz legends like Richie Beirach, resulting in a sound that is both intellectually engaging and emotionally resonant.
-
A Listener’s Sanctuary: Sheba’s dim, amber-lit atmosphere provides the perfect acoustic environment for Pliner’s intricate piano work. The lounge’s lush tropical décor and cozy fireplace create a cinematic “jazz club” feel that invites patrons to settle in for a night of attentive listening.
-
The Fillmore Tradition: Part of Sheba’s commitment to high-caliber, no-cover live music, this performance honors the historic Fillmore’s legacy as a hub for musical innovation. It’s an ideal destination for jazz purists looking for an authentic, “small-combo” experience without the pretense.
