About North Beach

North Beach, nestled between the Financial District and Fisherman’s Wharf, it has long been a cultural hub for the arts in San Francisco. In the late 19th century, it was home to a thriving Italian immigrant community which is why it is known as “Little Italy”.

In the early to mid-20th century North Beach was known for its lively jazz and folk music scene with performers like Lenny Bruce, Joan Baez, and Maya Angelou.

Famous Beat Generation writers and poets like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti called it home. Cafes and bookstores became gathering places for the Beatnik counterculture. The City Lights Bookstore, founded by Ferlinghetti, published and distributed works of the Beat writers.

In addition to its literary and musical legacy, North Beach has been home to notable artists such as painter Richard Diebenkorn and sculptor Beniamino Bufano. Murals and public art can be found throughout the neighborhood.

We invite you to keep the legacy of North Beach as a center for arts and culture alive by listening to live music, poetry and arts. Be part of our community!
