Dirty Works Jazz Jam
January 14 @ 8:30 pm - 12:00 am
FreeEvery 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Wednesday from 8:30 PM – 12:00 AM, The Lucky Horseshoe sheds its honky-tonk skin to become one of the city’s most dedicated jazz hangouts. Led by bassist Kyle Finley and the Dirty Works Jazz Band, this session brings a high-fidelity “straight-ahead” jazz experience to the heart of Bernal Heights. It is a professional-level jam that favors the raw energy of the 1950s and 60s, turning the “Shoe” into a bustling midnight sanctuary for musicians and listeners alike.
-
The Musical Direction: The residency focuses heavily on the “Golden Era” of jazz—think the hard-bop and heavy swing sounds of the Blue Note and Prestige labels. It is a night for fast tempos, complex improvisations, and deep, soulful grooves.
-
A “Performance” Jam: This isn’t a casual practice circle; it’s a show. The Dirty Works house band anchors the first set with a polished performance before opening the stage to local players. The emphasis is on maintaining a professional sound for the audience while fostering a “cut-your-teeth” environment for performers.
-
Community Atmosphere: Because the jam takes place in a true neighborhood tavern, the vibe is incredibly welcoming. You’ll find world-class musicians sharing the bar with long-time Bernal residents, all gathered under the dim lights and vintage mirrors of Cortland Avenue’s favorite local.
-
The Midnight Shift: One of the few sessions in the city that consistently runs until midnight on a weeknight, it serves as a vital late-night hub for the local creative community.
