Vibe: Electric Funk | Deep Blues | After-Hours Juke Joint
Located in the historic Fillmore District, directly across from the legendary Fillmore Auditorium, The Boom Boom Room is San Francisco’s premier destination for blues, boogie, funk, and soul. Established in its current form in 1997 with the blessing of blues king John Lee Hooker, the venue is named after his signature hit and serves as a living monument to the neighborhood’s “Harlem of the West” heritage.
The Sound: This is a club built for the groove. The programming focuses on heavy funk, New Orleans-style brass, and authentic blues. It is famous for its late-night jam sessions that often feature musicians dropping in after their main sets at larger venues nearby. The Atmosphere: The interior is low-lit and sultry, with plush red velvet curtains, flickering candles, and a 35-foot leather banquette. A dedicated red leather booth is permanently reserved up front—an eternal tribute to John Lee Hooker, who spent his final years holding court there. It is a high-energy space where the dance floor stays packed until the early morning hours.
The Legacy: Originally the site of Jack’s Tavern (the first integrated live music club in the district), the venue has hosted icons ranging from Etta James and Muddy Waters to modern-day legends like members of Lettuce, Snarky Puppy, and even surprise pop-ins from the likes of Van Morrison or David Bowie.
