Sheba Jazz Lounge (also known as Sheba Piano Lounge) is a cornerstone of the modern Fillmore District, a neighborhood once celebrated as the Harlem of the West. Founded by sisters Netsanet and Israel Alemayehu, it was created to bridge their Ethiopian heritage with the area’s deep jazz history. While neighboring legends like Yoshi’s and Rasselas have closed, Sheba has remained a resilient flag bearer for live music in the district for nearly two decades.
Live Music & Atmosphere
Entering Sheba feels less like walking into a nightclub and more like stepping into a warm, sultry living room. Hand‑painted walls in rich tropical tones, gauzy drapes, and a cozy alcove of black leather sofas set up a space designed for conversation as much as listening. Live music runs five nights a week, Wednesday through Sunday, with a palette that ranges from traditional and Latin jazz to blues, soul, R&B, and reggae — solo piano early in the evening, fuller bands and vocalists as the night deepens.
Food & Drinks
The kitchen turns out an authentically Ethiopian menu built around spices imported directly from the owners’ homeland. Signature dishes include Doro Wat (spicy chicken stew), sambussas, and colorful vegetarian platters, all served with the traditional sourdough flatbread, injera, meant for sharing. At the bar, African night–inspired cocktails and house creations weave in regional flavors and spices, making it as much a destination for dinner and drinks as for music.

• Communal dining is encouraged — many dishes are designed to be shared and eaten with your hands using injera.
• Live sets typically begin around 7:30–8:00 PM; there’s no cover, but it’s a true supper club, so food or drink orders are expected while you listen.
• The layout favors intimacy over spectacle; there really aren’t any bad seats in the house.
• Reservations are recommended for dinner, especially on weekends when the room fills quickly.
• Closed Mondays and Tuesdays; open Wednesday through Sunday.
